ENDISENSE

When the dashboard stops updating

A stale dashboard does not establish whether the sensor has stopped measuring. Communication may be interrupted, a component may have lost power or measurements may not yet have reached the platform. A useful specification separates three questions: was it measured, was it stored and was it transmitted?

Measurement, storage and transmission differ

The challenge: “backup included” is incomplete

A sensor battery does not keep a router running. An alternative cellular connection does not establish that readings are stored locally. Local memory does not establish that all readings appear immediately after reconnection. Examine the actual supplied configuration component by component.

Map the dependencies

Start at the sensor or logger and continue through the gateway, network connection and viewing platform. For each component, record its power source, communication path, local storage capability if present and behaviour when neighbouring components are unavailable.

Not every system includes every layer of backup. ENDISENSE must be specified around the selected equipment and requirements. This is a specification checklist, not a claim that a particular device includes these functions.

Test four situations separately

  1. The sensor operates but its connection to the gateway is interrupted.
  2. The gateway operates but its internet connection is unavailable.
  3. Site power is lost and each component depends on its own supply.
  4. Connectivity returns and stored readings may need reconciliation.

For each situation, define detection, notification and the alternative operating procedure. A fault in a notification path can also prevent notification of that fault. Where needed, assess an independent path or external availability check.

Review the return to service

Identify the last reading before the interruption and the first afterwards. Where stored data is recovered, distinguish measurement time from receipt time. Check time sequences, duplicates and missing intervals. Do not fill a chart in a way that suggests unrecorded measurements exist.

Plan acceptance exercises with agreed permissions, records and completion conditions. They should not require disconnecting critical equipment or exposing product to risk.

Questions for the supplier

What storage duration is supported at the chosen sampling rate, if storage exists? What backup time applies to each component, and under what conditions? How is a stale sensor shown? How are recovered readings ordered? What procedure covers the period without reliable monitoring?

Does stored data mean a remote alarm can still arrive? Not necessarily. Keeping a measurement and delivering a notification are separate capabilities.

Plan continuity scenarios with ENDISENSE and verify them against the equipment actually supplied.
